Everybody knows that despite our best efforts, accidents sometimes happen. Unfortunately, the same is true of dental emergencies. You never know when you might chip or crack a tooth or develop a suddenly extreme toothache. That said, if you want to avert a costly visit to the dentist then there are proactive things you can do to thwart possible damage and injuries. Keep reading to learn 3 tips to steer clear of the dentist’s chair!

Tip #1: Establish a Routine

If you aren’t already regularly cleaning your teeth at home, then it’s time to implement an oral hygiene routine. Tooth decay and gum disease can compromise the structure of your teeth and jawbone which leaves them more vulnerable to being hurt. If your pearly white has a cavity that you’re unaware of, for example, it’s more likely to become infected and require a root canal.

Fortunately, you can easily prevent this by consistently clearing your mouth of dangerous bacteria, plaque buildup, and tartar. Simply brush for two minutes and floss twice every day (once in the morning and again before bed) to keep them in prime condition.

Tip #2: Watch What You Eat

Another way to avoid dental dilemmas is by eating a wholesome diet that supports your oral health. Some foods that are overly sugary or acidic like candies, starches, and alcohol can erode the enamel and attract toxic germs. As a result, you’re more likely to develop cavities or other damage.

Try replacing them with foods that have helpful ingredients. Fill your plate with low-fat dairy products like cheese and yogurt, for example, because they contain calcium and phosphates that remineralize your teeth. Also, eat plenty of colorful vegetables and citrus fruits because they’re packed with vitamin C that keeps your gums happy. Drink water in place of soda to neutralize acid damage and rinse away unwanted particles.

Tip #3: Protect Your Smile

If you’re an athlete or engage in high-contact sports or activities, then you should invest in an appropriate mouthguard. Many professional teams and organizations require them, but even if no one asks you to wear one, it’s probably a good idea! These dental appliances can be store-bought for convenience, or your dentist can provide a higher-quality option that’s customized to fit like a glove. They go over your teeth to evenly distribute the force of a blow to mitigate the potential harm.

By implementing these healthy habits, you’re much less likely to end up in your dentist’s chair!
