This can mean new clothes\nand supplies, obviously, but it also means making sure your child is still\npracticing excellent oral hygiene even while class is in session. Here are 3\nback to school tips from your dentist that will help make sure that your young\nscholars take to their lessons with bright, healthy smiles on their faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. If They Haven\u2019t Had a Dental Appointment Yet, Schedule One Now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When your child is dealing with homework, tests and\nextracurricular activities, the last thing you want to do is pull them out of\nclass because they have a cavity or other oral health problem that needs to be\ndealt with. Having dental appointments done during summer vacation isn\u2019t just\nconvenient, it\u2019s also a good way to avoid potential dental crises down the\nline. The dentist will be able to find tooth decay in its earliest, most easily\ntreatable stages; furthermore, they can use dental sealants and fluoride\ntreatments to make the decay much less likely to happen in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a 2015 survey by Delta Dental, a third of\nchildren will miss school because of cavities and other dental health problems.\nBy having an appointment done at the beginning of the school year, you can avoid\nthe need for emergency appointments that could affect your child\u2019s performance\nin class. After all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southarlingtondentalcare.com\/family-dentistry.html\">family\ndentistry<\/a> is all about prevention!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Be Careful What You Pack in Their Lunches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some foods are worse for your child\u2019s teeth than you might\nthink. Applesauce seems healthy on the surface, but it\u2019s filled with natural\nand added sugars that can lead to tooth decay. In general, you should limit the\namount of sugar your child consumes; you should also be careful of starchy\nsnacks \u2013 pretzels, chips and crackers \u2013 as starches can be just as bad as sugar\nwhen it comes to cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crunchy fruits and vegetables such as apples and carrots are\nmuch better for the teeth; in addition to containing plenty of vitamins, they can\nactually scrub the teeth while they\u2019re being chewed. Plain milk, cheese cubes,\nleafy green vegetables and banana slices are also good options. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Encourage Them to Brush<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to make sure your kids are brushing at least twice\na day for about two minutes per brushing session. Do everything you can to make\nit a fun activity, such as letting them pick a toothbrush they like or playing\nsome of their favorite songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are just some general suggestions; your dentist might\nhave some more specific ideas for keeping your child\u2019s teeth in shape.
