They will help you get through it and\ngive you the treatment you need. Avoid touching the root, and if you can, try placing it back in its\nsocket. If that\u2019s not possible, keep it between your cheek and gums or in milk.<\/li><li>For a cracked tooth, rinse your mouth with warm\nwater immediately to keep the area clean. Use a cold compress to keep swelling\ndown.<\/li><li>If you bite your tongue or lip, clean it with\nwarm water and use a cold compress on the area.<\/li><li>If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth out\nwith warm water to help clean it out. Then try to gently floss around your\nteeth to remove any food that may have been stuck between them. Avoid putting\naspirin on the aching tooth or gums.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if your dental emergency doesn\u2019t occur during office\nhours, some dental offices provide a 24-hour phone service to connect you with\nsomeone who can provide advice for managing your situation until you can go in\nfor treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When should I go to the emergency room for a dental emergency?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek immediate medical help if you experience heavy oral\nbleeding, facial swelling, a severely damaged or broken jaw, or other such\nsituations. If something like this happens, the priority shifts to your safety\nand overall recovery. Once you\u2019ve addressed the major problem, you can go to a\ndentist to fix any remaining issues with your teeth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I prevent a dental emergency from happening in the future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all dental emergencies are preventable. However, some\nare. For example, when you play contact sports like football, basketball, or\nlacrosse, wear a mouthguard. Also, avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels, and hard\ncandy. Never use your teeth to open or cut things. Find a pair of scissors\ninstead. These simple steps can help save you the pain and stress of a dental\ninjury or emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter the dental emergency you\u2019re facing, make sure you\ncontact your dentist to schedule the next available appointment.
